Office pilots
Administrative German is not always easy to understand and most (social) benefits in Germany are only available once an application has been completed. Many people have problems with this for a variety of reasons. As a result, benefits are only approved much later or only partially. In the worst case, an application is not even submitted because the hurdle seems too great. Some people also find it difficult to raise their concerns with the authorities. They worry that they will not be understood and/or that they do not understand anything themselves. This can lead to misunderstandings and tense conversations.
Office guides can help in these cases. Volunteers are already working in this area in many districts in Schleswig-Holstein. Since October 1, 2020, the non-profit organization Steinburg Sozial has been offering this assistance, initially with two office pilots. They provide support in filling out and preparing applications and other forms (with the exception of tax and pension matters). They explain which forms need to be filled out and which documents need to be obtained and copied for the application. If necessary and at the request of the person seeking advice, the office guides will also accompany them to a public authority. However, they do not represent those seeking advice, but rather act as mediators and moral support. However, they do not offer professional or legal advice. If further support is required, there is close contact with the Itzehelp social counseling service.
